Legacy Operating Systems Compatibility Overview
Operating systems such as Microsoft Windows have been around for over 30 years, and early versions are no longer being supported either by Microsoft or the software companies selling solutions which run on them, such as cybersecurity companies. For instance, there are currently no commercial anti-virus solutions supporting either Windows XP or Windows Vista. While an old version of the security software can still be installed, without fresh signature updates they cannot protect against any recent malware.
However, very often small businesses will only upgrade legacy systems when there is a clear cost benefit, and therefore there is still a significant installed base of Windows XP and Vista machines, in places such as factories, warehouses and lobbies. Often these are dedicated systems where custom software has been written and only runs on old/legacy operating system versions. The cost of upgrading the custom software to a more up to date operating system may be prohibitively expensive, but nonetheless the business continues to need to run this essential software on an old and vulnerable operating system. As these systems are usually connected to the corporate network, they become the ‘weakest link’ and an easy entry point for malware.
Introducing FinalAV Security
FinalAV Security has been designed to be compatible with legacy operating systems.
FinalAV Security is able to support legacy platforms because without the need for black-list updates it is not burdened by the services economics. Traditional anti-virus solutions are actually a combination of software and services: unless the security labs of the anti-virus provider constantly updates the black-list of known malware, the software product running on your computer is next to useless. However, maintaining these black-lists of known malware is only affordable when an operating system version is used by a large enough number of users.
FinalAV Security does not require constant signature updates to be fully protected, as it is not based on the legacy approach of black-listing known malware. As such, it provides a more consistent and reliable protection than typical commercial solutions across different versions of an operating system.
With FinalAV Security, non-authenticated software runs under a very fine grained real-time sandbox (at kernel API level) allowing software to run unmodified. This means that rather than blocking known malware, FinalAV Security “sandboxes” any software application which is not digitally signed by its developers. This is particularly important with legacy operating systems, as typically many more system files are not digitally signed than in the more modern versions, making them a lot less secure.
