Ransomware Overview
Ransomware is a type of malware that threatens to either publish the victim’s personal data or permanently block access to it unless a ransom is paid off. Payment is typically demanded in cryptocurrency, as it cannot be traced to the hacker. After payment, a decryption key is provided to the victim to recover her files, although it does not always happen.
For organisations where data is particularly valuable (for instance, proprietary customer data, contracts, operational information, product intellectual property), there may not be an alternative to paying the ransom. However, regulatory frameworks are increasingly discouraging payments as well as demanding disclosure of data breaches.
Introducing FinalAV Security
FinalAV Security’s new security framework has been designed to deal effectively with ransomware.
Otherwise, non-authenticated software runs under a very fine grained real-time sandbox (at kernel API
level) allowing software to run unmodified. This means that rather than blocking known malware, FinalAV Security “sandboxes” any software application which is not digitally signed by its developers. There is no need to previously identify any new malware. This effectively ends the current cat and mouse game between cybersecurity companies and hackers.
By using a sophisticated real-time tracking of file ownership at OS kernel API level combined with the “sandboxing” of non-authenticated software, FinalAV Security effectively prevents the damage caused by unknown ransomware even in the early hours of an attempted attack. Behavioural patterns detection eventually leads to the termination of the ransomware process, but most importantly the data has been protected right from the beginning.
